Improving Your Sleep

This is a topic that I'm sure everyone can improve on, especially with the semester coming to an end very shortly. There are numerous tips to improving your sleep. One being the hardest, staying off of your phone. The phone is a major distraction, being that you can access virtually anything you want with ease. That's why, if you can, put your phone down for the evening 30 minutes prior to falling asleep and reap the benefits with a deeper sleep.

  1. Sleep is something I treasure. I wish I could have more of it. One thing that helps me sleep is the focus of the breath. A problem I used to have was that my mind would race when I laid my head down to sleep. These racing thoughts would keep me up for hours on end. I finally realized that if I focus on the in and out of my breath, then the racing thoughts will subside and I gently fall asleep. Try this technique next time you have difficulty and see if it's beneficial for you. Also, this technique works for meditation as well!

  2. There is no better feeling than waking up well rested! As well as not looking at my phone for 30 minutes before bed, I try not to look at my phone for 30 minutes when I wake up, that really helps me set my mind straight for the upcoming day! Another great tip I learned for getting better sleep is to fall asleep at consistent times. Your body has a natural pattern for waking up and falling asleep, called your circadian rhythm. Your circadian rhythm is a set loop, so by consistently going to bed at the same time over a period of time, your body will naturally start to feel tired around that set time, making it easier to fall asleep when you actually go to bed!

  3. This is a great tip for someone who wants to add more time to their sleep schedule. I remember when I tried out this trick and it helped me start falling asleep earlier and earlier. A phone in bed is a huge distraction and the LCD screens on smartphones actually contribute to keeping you awake, so removing it from the bedroom can help you fall asleep.

  4. This topic is extremely important for the younger generation. Today, technology has taken it tool on lives and is causing a a big distraction. I agree that if we would limit our use of phone time it would benefit each and every one of us. I try and not use my phone before I go to bed because of the bad habit it generates along with the fluctuation of melatonin levels. The blue light from phone, tablets, and computers causes our melatonin level to decrease making it harder to fall asleep.

  5. Awesome tip Jeff. I also struggle to fall asleep at night. I agree that phones are a huge distraction. Occasionally though, I play music on my phone or computer to help me sleep. Hopefully we all find ways to get better sleep to make sure we do good on our finals

Physical Education

Being a phys ed teacher is much more than just blowing a whistle and rolling a ball. Being a phys ed teacher means that you get the opportunity to impact every single kids life. I can almost guarantee that every single one of you have at least one memory from phys ed class growing up. I believe the goal of a phys ed teacher should be to give every student the confidence, through experience, to be able to live a healthy and well life. That doesn't mean just until you graduate high school. Giving them the tools to carry on a healthy lifestyle through adulthood is a goal I believe everyone should have.

Nutrition and Physical Activity

I have learned over the years, from courses taken too my own personal experiences on how what I eat effects my workout and how I feel. There have been days when I would go to the Arc on an empty stomach and realizing how exhausted I would feel. Your body needs energy to be able to perform at the level you wish. Even something as simple as oatmeal before you go workout in the morning will give you a little boost to get you through your workout. I recommend taking time to make breakfast in the morning before you go workout if you are a morning person.
